What we believe

We believe a house should be representative of its time, not an artificial recreation or historical reference. A house should be representative of its owners, who they are, their aspirations, and how they live. A house should be functionally intuitive, present beauty even in the mundane, and thoughtful to the last detail. The materials a house is built from should be technologically cutting-edge where required for performance, and timelessly beautiful where desired. A house should embrace nature, not only through views, but by understanding its place within it.

We believe that a highly sustainable low-energy house, and an uncompromising design aesthetic are not mutually exclusive. Every project we design is developed as a highly insulated, extensively air-sealed house with very low environmental impact from day one. It’s not an afterthought, it’s not an optional add-on service, it is the only reasonable, responsible way to design a house today. Because this way of thinking is integrative into the design process, all viable strategies for material use, construction methods, and mechanical systems are explored early on to ensure environmental stewardship does not create a burden on the project budget.

We believe the tactility of materials and unquantifiable experience of a space are as important to a design as the house’s curb appeal. Successful architecture should celebrate the movement of light through the space, and avoid unnecessary ornament. It should inspire, comfort, protect, and endure.
